Salvaleón de Higüey is a city in the Dominican Republic, it is the head municipality of the province of La Altagracia. It is located about 145 km east of the city of Santo Domingo.
In recent decades, the province of La Altagracia has had a continuous and dizzying economic growth, product of the development of a notable tourism industry, which is why it is nicknamed the capital of Dominican tourism. The takeoff of this sector is due to the excellent natural conditions of this territory, its scenic beauty, its pleasant climate and the strong investments made by foreign companies.
Higüey has experienced a strong demographic growth that meant that in 2010 it was close to 170,000 inhabitants, where a large part of this population is made up of workers from the large hotel complexes in Punta Cana, a town located a few kilometers away. In addition, the rapid demographic growth has caused it to have a significant number of immigrant population, native to various parts of the country, especially the coastal plain of the eastern region (Santo Domingo, La Romana, San Pedro de Macorís).
In the urban area of the city, two main monuments stand out: the Basilica of Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia and the church of San Dionisio from the 16th century.
